Its name is not sure even nowadays.It is given by Lord Byron in 19th century because it is said that the name comes from the sighs of those sentenced to death who crossed the bridge between Old Prison and the New  Prison, situated beyond the Palazzo River.
The Bridge of Sighs was built at the beginning of the 16th century and designed by Antoni Contino.It also represent one of the most famous views from the city.Even its history remind us its importance: the famous and the one fugitive which rescued from the prison was Giacomo Casanova. The legend say that over the bridge passed for the last time the prisoners to get on the other side of the prison.

Another thing said the legend: that every couple  who will kiss on a gondola under the bridge at the sunset will remain together and  forever.
The prison building is older than the Doge’s palace and the interior of the bridge in Venice has also two narrow passages separated by a wall and windows with bars for the security of the prisoners.
